Final Submission for Project 3Goals
The purpose of this project is to learn more about how to set typography to be printed as a letterpress poster. Everyone will have the opportunity to design a poster that may eventually be letterpress printed at Union Press. At the end of this assignment, we will visit Union Press and everyone will be able to print a copy of the winning poster.
Tasks
- In-class 11/13
- Choose at least one quote, phrase, or colloquialism to typeset
- Sketch 5 poster design options for your quote(s) following the parameters below (you can make 5 different quotes if you wish)
- Due 11/27
- Refine your top 3 poster designs (ask your friends and peers for feedback, and please feel free to email me your designs and I’ll give feedback as well) and create poster drafts in InDesign
- Print your drafts on tabloid size paper for an in class critique
- After critique, choose one poster draft to continue refining
- Due 12/4
- Submit your final poster (link above)
- December 11
- Voting period for poster submissions is open, please vote using this link (coming soon)
Poster Parameters
- Print must fit within 11" x 17" (any size or orientation)
- Text should be no longer than 100 characters
- Include a byline if your text is credited to someone
- Work with only 2 Pantone colors (plus blind deboss) on a white background - no white type
- Use only type, small embellishments (like lines, stars, standard shapes), and color blocks
- No full bleed available - keep a ½ in margin clear
- Note about typefaces: Union Press can only print typefaces that they have in their studio. They will work to match size and style, but it will likely not be exact.

Evaluation
Your grade will be determined by your ability to follow instructions, stay within guidelines, and produce a poster that's both well-designed and suited for printing on a letterpress. You can earn up to 100 points. You will have one chance to re-submit your work based on feedback to earn any points missed.
Timeline
- November 13: Intro project, sketch 5 options (supposed to be in class, but now at-home)
- Novemeber 27: 3 draft versions of posters due in class
- December 4: final poster due
- December 11: voting open
- December 12: announcement of winning poster
- December 13, 15: Hopefully do the in person workshop at Union Press 🙏🏼
Project 02Using master pages & styles

Submit File for Project 2Goals
The purpose of this exercise is to ensure you have the InDesign skills to create and manage the layout and style of your designs. You will be typesetting an article from the web, re-imagining the content for a print layout. Among other tools, you will be using master pages and paragraph & character styles to give your work structure and visual harmony.
Tasks
- Use this article and typeset at least the first 2 sections (I. Mortal Danger and II. Hell is a Cold Place) 5 pts
- All images in the included sections must be included.
- Download link to a .zip file of the images (Make sure to download the folder, not drag directly from Dropbox)
- All captions for those images must be included.
- You don't need to include the little soundbyte texts, since those wouldn't be available for print.
- Create an 8.5”x11” (letter) portrait InDesign document, with facing pages 5 pts
- Create at least 2 master page spreads to apply to your document 20 pts
- Create a grid with columns in your master pages (so that they apply to all pages) 10 pts
- Make use of color, creating at least 2 new swatches 5 pts
- Create at least 3 paragraph styles and apply them throughout your document 10 pts
- Create at least 1 character style to apply 10 pts
- Use the following content types to create an interesting and professional looking layout: 10 pts
- Headline
- Sub-heads
- Body text
- Quotes
- Captions
- Images
- Name your file: Lastname_p2.indd 5 pts
- When you are done, use the InDesign package functionality to create a packaged folder (Make sure to copy fonts and include a PDF [Press Quality], and don’t change the name of the folder) 10 pts
- Compress and upload the packaged file through the link provided above (or on the home page – it's the same link) 10 pts

Project 01Using a grid for resume layouts

Submit Project 1Goals
The purpose of this exercise is to ensure that your basic InDesign skills are on track for your Typography 1 course needs. You will be iterating on a single body of text to create multiple layouts using InDesign. You should also explore how the use of a grid informs your design decisions.
Tasks
- Create a letter-sized (8 ½” x 11”) portrait InDesign document with 5 pages and build a grid 10 pts
- Using the same grid on all pages, create five (5) unique resume layouts 10 pts
- Each one-page resume layout should include the exact same content, and should have at least three separate sections 20 pts
- Only use one typeface (your choice), but vary the following elements to build hierarchy and create distinct layouts 20 pts
- Column widths
- Type size
- Font weight/style
- Black and white typography only (no rules (lines), shapes, or images) 10 pts
- Name your InDesign file: LastName-TypeTools-p1 10 pts
- When you are done, use the InDesign package functionality to create a packaged folder (Make sure to copy fonts and include a PDF [Press Quality], and don’t change the name of the folder) 10 pts
